Our phone and internet went out for the second time this week so I got a few more photos scrapped. Here’s what I made this weekend:

Journaling: Ever since we went to the North Shore and played at Gooseberry Falls, the kids have wanted to go back and do that. Minnehaha Creek is the closest thing we have around here so we went and played there several times this summer. Earlier in the year after a really wet spring, the water was really rushing. Lauren lost her shoe and got carried away downstream. It was pretty harrowing. Someone actually found the shoe and carried it back upstream and returned it! Later in the year, the kids would enjoy building rock dams and floating downstream across the small rapids. 8/2011

Quickpage and Cluster Artist Call – Paid Position

Hi everyone. I am looking for some help in the following areas:

Cluster Artist
Create 5 clusters per kit and coordinating products. I release 1-2 kits per month. You get the kit and coordinates to keep for your personal use and I will pay you $7.50 for doing this job and delivering the layered photoshop files to me. One revision per item is included in what I pay you. I will use the clusters for sale in my store and you will not have any rights to redistribute them.

Quickpage Artist
Create 4 12x12 quickpages per kit and coordinating products. 1-2 kits per month. You get the kit and coordinates to keep for your personal use and I will pay you $12 for doing this job and delivering the layered photoshop files to me. One revision per item is included in what I pay you. I will use the quickpages for sale in my store and you will not have any rights to redistribute them.

Additional requirements: must use Photoshop or Elements to design these items. Cluster artist: Must be able to create basic frame shapes as they will not be included. Must have knowledge of FTP to send and receive materials, or be willing to learn. Must communicate very well to understand any revisions or requests that I make for the products you create and answer emails promptly. Very important: must be able to meet deadlines. I will usually ask to see your products within 3 days of you receiving the materials.

Please specify if you are interested I the cluster position or the QP position. I prefer to NOT have one person working in both areas.

Digital Scrapbooking Layouts and Camera Saga

I’m taking a little time off from designing while my kids are on winter break to create some digital scrapbooking pages for my family. I was close to getting caught up when I went on a retreat this fall but I don’t think I’ve scrapped too much since then! I am excited because I figured out how to unfreeze my good Nikon camera, which I have been unable to use for a couple months. First I lost the receipt to register the warranty. Then I found it. (it started acting up just a few months after I got it) Next, I got registered at Nikon but the system kept kicking me out when I login (still does.) I couldn’t find any contact info on the site. Finally found it, tried calling a couple times but was on hold so long I had to abandon the call while something went down at home. (kids!!) Then on Christmas, my AWESOME hubby got me this really cool set of computer speakers (complete with a rocking sub woofer). He said he really wanted to get me a new digital camera but didn’t know exactly what I wanted. So I started looking for after Christmas deals on Amazon – there were quite a few but I wanted to take one last try at getting my beloved Nikon fixed. It has a huge zoom, starts up fast, has very little lag time between shots and takes great pictures. But it was totally frozen – would only turn on and in order to turn it off, I would have to remove and reinsert the battery. I got curious to see if others had this problem and knew how to get it in for warranty service. So I started reading the user reviews on Amazon. Sure enough, quite a few people had this problem and had to send it back to Nikon for service. It seemed like people were without them for about a month to get the service done. I was feeling kind of nosey to see how many people had the same problem as me so I kept reading – all the way to page 13 where I saw a FIX – someone said if the camera was frozen and you gave the zoom a slight twist after turning it on, it would start working again. I tried it and was AMAZED – it worked!! So it was like getting a new camera that I loved for Christmas. So now I’ve taken a bunch more pictures of our winter break activities such as roller skating so I’m even farther away from getting caught up. I probably should just set aside the whole idea of “caught up” and enjoy making pages more often! So anyway, here’s what I’ve made lately:

I LOVE the lighting on this one – we went to this beach a jillion times last summer but after dinner delivered the best photo opportunities. Sorry, I lost the credits listing on this page.

With my good camera, there are enough megapixels to fill the width of a 12x12 page and I carried the color of the playground tube down to the bottom with some gradient work, a little blending and a little erasing. Border is from my Halloween Fun digital scrapbooking kit. I found the quote online.

There has been a little bit of a shakeup behind the scenes here at Christine Smith Digital Design. As most of you know, my digital scrapbook designs are available in my store at christinesmith.net as well as at Digitals, MyMemories, PxlCafe and ScrapDish. Dec / Jan Card Challenge

Menu Plan Monday

It’s Menu Plan Monday! Here’s what we’re having this week. I feel a little uninspired today so there are not any new recipes for our family but I am feeding my family of 7 (one’s at college) for about $125 per week so that’s something!

MON – salmon, fish sticks for the kids, rice pilaf peas (we were supposed to have this last week but we had pizza Friday night because I was right by Trader Joes and picked up some of their fabulous pizza dough and made homemade pizza)

TUES – corn dogs, baked fries, veggies + dip (KIDS night)

WED – grilled cheese, chicken noodle or tomato soup, apples & dip

THURS – chili + corn bread, veggies + dip

FRI – homemade french bread pizza (yes, we eat some type of pizza every Friday night!!), antipasto salad

SAT – meatloaf, baked potatoes, corn, coleslaw

SUN – beef and broccoli stir fry, egg rolls, rice

Digital Scrapbooking Software Review

When I started selling my designs at MyMemories.com earlier this year, I was given a complimentary copy of their digital scrapbooking software, My Memories Suite, to create custom content for the site. It has taken me a while to get through some other projects and try out the software but I have put it through its paces and am ready to give my honest opinion of how well this software works for creating digital scrapbook pages.

Over the years, a number of people have asked my about creating their own digital scrapbook pages – how do I do it? What software do I use and how much does it cost? Is it easy to learn? Since I am a digital scrapbook designer, I’m not using a consumer grade product to create my pages – I use Photoshop CS5 and I can’t really recommend someone spend $700 to get started in digital scrapbooking. Photoshop Elements, a consumer product rather than a professional product, costs $100 – that still seems like quite a bit and honestly, it was made for photo editing and manipulation much more than digital scrapbooking. Photoshop Elements is a good program for digital scrapbooking – if you don’t mind the learning curve. If I wanted to help a friend or blog visitor get started in digital scrapbooking using Photoshop Elements as their program, I would literally have to sit down with them and show them all the different steps to creating their first layout and beyond. I actually did this with a friend and after 3 hours of instruction, she still wasn’t able to create things easily, on her own.

So where does My Memories Suite fit in? First, the price is really great. The software retails for $39.97. As a designer at My Memories, I am able to offer you a coupon code for $10 off that so you can get started for just under $30. (See below for code). So the price point is great, but what about the functionality? I really liked using this program and am excited about it because my 11 year old daughter really wants to learn how to create digital scrapbook pages herself but I definitely didn’t want to go through showing her how to use Photoshop.

Here’s what I like about the program:

First and foremost, this program was made specifically for digital scrapbooking, rather than photo editing. Everything about it was created to help you create albums and individual pages. You simply start by placing a background on your page, then move to the photos tab and move to the embellishments tab. They are all lined up on the right. For each thing you add, there are quick and easy to understand options like mats, shadows and shapes. The program interface is very well designed.
Create whole albums quickly. This is great for projects where you have a whole series of pictures like a vacation. Keeps all your related pages together. This feature is great because if you are working on a set of pictures in an album: you can make changes, duplicate pages, copy embellishments across the project and basically mess around with it as much as you want without having to open and close individual pages. I am planning on creating my 20th wedding anniversary vacation album in this program rather than in Photoshop so I can plan out all where all the photos will go and then do the embellishing and text.
One click conversion of photos from full color to effects like black and white or sepia
The menu options and navigation are clear and easy to understand. Some of the steps involved in creating a layout in Photoshop are “hidden” a bit in the menus (such as clipping a photo to a shape). The user interface is easy to use and provides ample workspace to create layouts.
You can view finished albums or sets of digital scrapbook pages in a slideshow with different viewing options
It is very easy to export images for printing or the web. In Photoshop, you have to manually resize and export – My Memories Suite does the resizing for you. You can also export everything in an album to .jpg at once. In Photoshop or Elements, you have to do this page by page.
I LOVE how the shadows work in this program. You can carry a shadow style across all the embellishments or photos in fewer clicks than Photoshop and I think they look nice and realistic. You can see how the shadow will look as you adjust it on the fly. You can choose the color, the pixel offset, the opacity and the blur. It’s REALLY well done
Quickly mat photos. Just click on the photo and choose the mat option. Choose the color and the size. Copy to ALL photos in one click. If your photo is rectangular, the corners will stay square and the same number of pixels across on all sides. This is a big deal to me because in Photoshop, a popular way to add a mat is to add a “stroke” to the photo, but the corners are not quite square. That really bugs me! Another way is to add a new layer behind the photo. If you do this, you have to drag out the corner of the mat, but it goes proportionately on all sides and then you have to adjust it / eyeball it to get it even. Not that fun. Right in the mat screen in MyMemories, there’s a color picker so you can grab a color from the layout to do your mat, too. VERY COOL.
Create rounded corners easily. This takes a lot more steps in Photoshop – you have to create a new layer, create the rounded rectangle (hidden a bit in the fly out menus), position it properly on your photo, send it back a layer, click on the photo layer and then clip it to the shape (in a different set of menus or memorize the keyboard shortcut) and lock the layers. In My Memories Suite, it’s one click in the photo menu. You also instantly choose square, oval or circular. This is a HUGE time saver.
Create paper shapes easily. Want a square or strip of paper? Very easily done. ALSO, this can be changed. If you decide you want to use a larger strip of paper, you can make a change but going back to the crop box.
Easy to use outside content – you can use anything from my digital scrapbooking store at christinesmith.net in this program. You can add papers and embellishements from the menu system inside the program or open the containing folder with my digital scrapbooking kit and simply drop and drag into the program. VERY slick. I used to sell my designs at a different store that had its own software and it did not offer drop and drag, which I consider a huge drawback.
Good text editing. View fonts as they look (not just the title) in the drop down menu, use the color picker to match your page, drag and resize text box. Auto text wrap.
You can add narration and music to your albums – a great option if you want to create something like a graduation or anniversary display album that runs on a laptop at your event. I’ve seen this done for a few parties and it was a really neat idea – this software includes the option to do that!
There’s even a spell check for your journaling – definitely not an option in Photoshop.

Drawbacks

There’s only one thing missing that would make this program 110% perfect – you cannot change the color of embellishments or papers. So if you have a red button in your stash, and it’s not quite the right color of red, you cannot adjust it. I think this is only a big deal if you really like to mix and match stuff from your digital scrapbooking stash. If you are a “kit scrapper” – meaning you mostly stick to using papers and embellishments from a single digital scrapbooking kit for a page or project then this isn’t really such an issue – most likely the designer has included more than one color of any given element or paper so you have many options for embellishing.

Bottom Line

Even without the ability to change colors of embellishments, I heartily recommend this software and am excited to start creating my own digital scrapbook album in it, as well as creating more custom content for the software users. Digitals Layout of the Day

This layout was chosen as the layout of the day at Digitals on Saturday. It’s always fun to get a little recognition for my scrapping efforts, and an extra bonus that it was made with a kit I made (Sunny Summer Days). I have heard from a number of designers that their design work has totally crowded out and overcome their scrapbooking. I personally kind of go in spurts – a bunch of designing alternated with a bunch of scrapping. Every once in a while I balance the two a little but more moderately but I’m still happy that I am able to do both. I guess it doesn’t really matter if I’m a sprinter or a walker as long as I am making progress toward the finish line. Right now, the finish line for my scrapping is to get caught up to the same month we’re living in. On the scrapbook reatreat, I got done through June, not counting my cruise pictures, which I think of as sort of a separate project. I’m thinking about doing that project as a bound book but I am a little put off by the need to worry about the bleed and margins and trying to figure out which printing company to use. So right now, that’s on the back burner until I just get caught up on my everyday pages. The next 2 I do chronologically are going to be from kits that are on my list of projects to make so that will slow things down a little but I can say that I am definitely enjoying the process – hope you are too!

Just the FUN stuff – the thing I really love to do! Digital Scrapbook Pages and Organization Tip

So scrapping is like cheap therapy for me. I really enjoy getting pages done and looking at the finished creations – and the kids drag out our scrapbooks several times a month too. We have a little running family joke about calling them the “Books of Knowledge” – if we can’t remember when something happened or what we did for someone’s birthday party, we just consult the books of knowledge for the answers LOL. I saw a funny quote the other day that sort of goes along the same lines -

If it’s isn’t in the scrapbook, it didn’t happen.

It’s not quite to that level at my house but I honestly can’t remember things like I used to be able to and looking at our pages brings back all sorts of fond memories.

The other thing I enjoy almost as much as scrapping is doing it from an organized stash. I have spent many, many hours tagging my supplies in ACDSee Photo Manager. When my hard drive crashed last year and I lost some of my supplies I was still able to get up and running with a slightly older backup of my stash and a backup of my tagged database. What a relief. It keeps me from spending too much money (or buying duplicates). Now I’ve organized all my templates too and I think it’s really going to help a lot. I always pick the photos I’m going to scrap first – before I ever choose a kit or color scheme or any other supplies. To me, the photos are the most important thing on a page. But I do like to use templates at least part of the time just as a time saver. I had them all tagged with one tag – “templates” in ACDSee but recently, I went through and tagged them all by the number of photos the template has room for because that’s how I look for what I want – basing it on the number of photos I have. If I can’t find one I like with the right number, I go up 1 and see if I can put a piece of paper in one of the photo spots. I am excited about this improvement in my scrapping system!

If you don’t have ACDSee, you could make folders for the number of photos a template holds also.

Graduation Party Digital Scrapbook Pages

Do you sell CU products in your PU store or a consignment store? Would you like more exposure for your CU products without committing to site participation or monthly upload requirements?

CUDigitals.com is under new ownership and my vision for the store is to make it a place where designers can shop a large variety of CU products from designers they may otherwise have a hard time finding. Even if you have a small CU product line, I will welcome you if you are selling high quality, full-size, interesting/unique and realistic commercial use tools and supplies. Designers with medium and larger products lines also welcome.
